Before anyone comes

• Check the NEA registration. Only companies registered with the National Environment Agency as Vector Control Operators can be engaged for vector control work, and NEA publishes the list of registered operators (NEA).
• Know the price range. Published Singapore price lists: a one-off cockroach treatment from S$140 for an HDB flat to S$230 for a three-storey bungalow, bed bugs S$450 to S$1,500 for two treatments, and rats and mice S$450 to S$500 for four weekly visits (Protect Pest Control); general pest control from S$120 a treatment, termite baiting from S$700 a year and termite soil treatment from S$1,600 (Rentokil). Companies set their own prices.
• Ask what the treatment uses and whether you need to leave the flat, cover food, or keep children and pets away for a few hours.
• Ask about the warranty and how many follow-up visits are included, especially for termites and bed bugs.
